SILVIO PETTIROSSI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

PTD-2020-1b.jpg

The design for the new Terminal 2 at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport celebrates the airport's role as an international bridge linking Paraguay and the world. The new terminal will be the main entrance gate to Paraguay and the first and last image of the country that will be printed in the eyes of travelers. In this sense, it constitutes the “main civic gate” of the nation.
The architecture of the building needs to incorporate a memorable image of Paraguay, formed by its landscape and its naturalness, its traditional architectural legacy, and its colorful artisanal culture. The design of the building aims to evoke a sense of place and link the passenger journey to what is unique to Paraguay. The design of the new airport arises from contact with this unique environment, with its landscape and naturalness, its architectural, artisanal and cultural legacy.

The project proposes a public plaza in front of the terminal that incorporates a fountain, shops and green areas, open to all citizens of Asunción, not only for those who want to travel, considering that the majority of passengers going to the airport are accompanied by at least 5 other people. Visually, the presence of a plaza is much more attractive and culturally appropriate than place a parking lot as a focal point in front of the terminal. The plaza provides a welcoming sense of place that leads to the iconic bridge structure of the terminal roof symbolizing the bridges and rivers that one must cross when traveling Paraguay. The local brick vaults form the concourse and holdroom spaces on the airside of the terminal. Both the arrivals hall and departures hall feature monumental spaces that echo the expansive vistas found within the country.
