XIAMEN ISLAND AIRPORT

XIA-7.avif

In ancient Xiamen, courtyards were a major part of the historic architecture.

The Xiamen Island Airport masterplan concept honors that tradition by including special wetland courtyards designed to scrub the air of pollution. These courtyards act as lungs that purify air entering the terminal’s mechanical system.

Located on a manmade island, the 380,000 m2 terminal is expandable with two secondary low-cost carrier terminals. At the front of the main terminal is a Ground Transportation Center with a high-speed rail connection to Xiamen.

The project is in a unique location: it is the Chinese airport closest to Taiwan, with the Kinmen Islands of Taiwan only two kilometers off the coast. The master plan incorporates a ferry link from Taiwan so that Taiwanese citizens can use the airport without crossing the border into China.
